| Total construction started on new U.S. homes rose 4.4% in December to an annual rate of 1.09 million, according to the Commerce Department and is the highest level since the beginning of 2008. For all of 2014, there were just over 1 million total housing starts, the highest annual total since 2007 and up almost 9% from 2013 but still below 1.5 million which was the annual average over the 20 years leading up to the housing bubble’s peak in 2006. | |||||||
| February gold is up 0.3%, to $1,298 an ounce after settling at the highest price in five months yesterday. It has gained for seven straight sessions, and is up about 10% year to date. The gain has been attributed to investors seeking havens on ngoing troubles in Ukraine, political uncertainty in Greece, turmoil in Europe triggered by the Swiss National Bank ending the Swiss franc peg to the euro, and bargain hunting after depressed prices at the end of 2014. | |||||||
