| Total construction started on new U.S. homes rose 4.4% in December to an annual rate of 1.09 million, according to the Commerce Department and is the highest level since the beginning of 2008. For all of 2014, there were just over 1 million total housing starts, the highest annual total since 2007 and up almost 9% from 2013 but still below 1.5 million which was the annual average over the 20 years leading up to the housing bubble’s peak in 2006. | |||||||
| China’s Shanghai Composite Index jumped up 4.7%, marking its biggest daily percentage increase since October 2009, extending gains after yesterday’s 1.8% gain when China reported a higher-than-expected economic growth for December. The index fell 7.7% for its worst drop in more than six years, triggered by a crackdown on margin trading by regulators on Monday. The financials led the gains. | |||||||
