The Nikkei lost 1.3% as the yen rose to nearly ¥102 to the dollar. The yen is stronger as U.S. and European governments plan to ramp up sanctions against Russia as early as today. Pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine on Sunday paraded Western military observers as hostages. In China, the Shanghai Composite lost 1.2% after China’s securities regulator announced a resumption of initial public offerings late on Friday, raising concerns that new listings will drain funds from the weak stock market. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index lost 0.4%. |
Investors also look ahead to potentially market-moving events later in the week. In Asia, the main piece of economic data will be Chinese manufacturing numbers for April, out Thursday; while in the U.S., investors will be looking ahead to the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting, which concludes Wednesday, and the monthly jobs report on Friday. |
Microsoft said over the weekend that a flaw in Internet Explorer could open up the Web browser to “limited, targeted attacks” . Microsoft disclosed it was aware of the flaw, which could impact Internet Explorer versions 6 through 11. The security flaw could make a targeted computer run unwanted software following a successful hacking attack. Microsoft shares are up 1% to $40.38 |
