The KUIK Morning Market Report for Monday, October 29: |
Markets are closed because of Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast, but here are the stories we’re following: |
The U.S. securities industry canceled equity trading on all markets today, and some New Jersey refineries shut or reduced operations as Sandy headed toward New York City with 70-mile- per-hour winds. Federal government offices in the Washington area will be open only for emergency personnel beginning today. |
The Commerce Department reported consumer spending rose a seasonally adjusted 0.8% last month while personal income climbed at a slower 0.4% pace. Which means consumers are spending their savings. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch forecast a 0.7% increase in consumer spending and a 0.4% rise in personal income. |
Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are tied in a new Ohio poll of likely voters, erasing the president’s lead from a month ago. The poll for the Ohio Newspaper Organization, a consortium of the state’s eight largest newspapers, found each candidate with 49% of the vote in the hard-fought state. The poll, conducted by the University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. |
And in Europe, stock markets fell as the biggest storm in U.S. history bore down on the U.S. East Coast, causing investors jitters. Shares of energy stocks and financials were among the biggest decliners. The Stoxx Europe 600 index fell 0.5% to 269.17, after closing down 1.3% last week as downbeat corporate earnings from both sides of the Atlantic weighed on sentiment. |
