| Initial jobless claims rose by 28,000 to a seasonally adjusted 385,000 in the week ended March 30, according to the Labor Department. That’s the highest level since late November. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected claims to drop to 350,000. | |||||||
| The Bank of Japan announced an aggressive easing program as newly appointed Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda began his two-year campaign to rid the world’s third-largest economy of over 15 years of deflation. The central bank said it would buy Japanese Government Bondss so that their amount outstanding will increase at an annual pace of about ¥50 trillion ($530 billion). Markets reacted to the move, with the dollar rising to 94.46 yen from ¥92.90 just ahead of the decision, and the Nikkei swung from big losses to a close with a 2.2% gain. | |||||||
