The Commerce Department reports the U.S. trade deficit in December and for the full year both rose to the highest levels since 2008. The deficit in December rose 5.3% to $53.1 billion. Economists expected $52.2 billion. Imports increased 2.5% to a record $256.5 billion while exports rose 1.8% to $203.4 billion, also a record. For all of 2017, the trade gap was up 12.1% to $566 billion.

Idaho Republican Michael Crapo and Sherrod Brown, a Democrat from Ohio, will hold a Senate Banking Committee hearing today to examine SEC and CFTC oversight of  virtual currencies. The SEC’s Jay Clayton and CFTC’s Christopher Giancarlo teamed up in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, give their views on regulation of blockchain initiatives, cryptocurrencies and initial coin offerings.
