China overtook Japan as the top holder of US treasurys in June, according to the Treasury International Capital report. China was the top holder back in October 2016. Its holdings of U.S. government paper rose to $1.147 trillion, up more than $44 billion from May. Japan’s fell $20.5 billion to almost $1.1 trillion. The yuan has strengthened against the greenback in the past three months. The dollar bought 6.68 yuan today, compared with 6.90 yuan back in May.
