October’s consumer price index posted the first increase in three months, but overall U.S. inflation remained low according to the Labor Department. The CPI rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2%. From October 2014 to October 2015, consumer inflation has risen only 0.2%. Energy prices rose an adjusted 0.3% and food edged up 0.1%, the smallest gain in five months. Excluding food and energy, core consumer prices rose 0.2%. Over the past 12 months core prices have climbed only 1.9%. Inflation-adjusted hourly wages advanced 0.2% in October and have climbed 2.4% in the past 12 months.
The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing market index for November fell 3 points from October’s upwardly-revised reading of 65. Economists expected 64 where readings abover 50 signal improvement. Current conditions and expectations for the next six months both fell, while buyer traffic rose slightly.
