The New York Fed reports business activity in the New York region declined for the fourth straight month in November and showed few signs of improvement. The Empire State manufacturing index inched up to negative 10.7 from negative 11.4 in October. Economist expected negative 6.5. This is the first time since early 2009 that the index has been below negative 10 for four straight months. New orders and shipments had smaller drops while labor conditions worsened, with declines in both employment levels and hours worked. The six-month outlook shows slight optimism.
Marketwatch reports Japanese gross domestic product fell at an 0.8% annualized pace in the third quarter, down following a revised 0.7% drop in the second. Back-to-back quarters of economic decline confirms that Japan is in another recession. That is a setback for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s drive to put Japan back on a higher growth path. Since he came to power, Japan’s economy has declined in five of 11 quarters,
European currencies weakened toay as investors, shaken by the in Paris last Friday, moved into the perceived safety of the U.S. dollar and Japanese yen.
