The Labor Department reports there were 276,000  initial jobless claims in the week ending May 30 that included the Memorial Day holiday. That was down 8,000 from the week before. That’s still near a 15-year low. Continuing claims fell by 30,000 to 2.19 million in the week ended May 23, the fewest number since November 2000.
Wikileaks is offering $100,000 for the text of the classified Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal currently being negotiated. The money is being raised via crowdfunding. Reuters reports that the text of the TPP will be publicly available for 60 days before it is signed by the president but that’s not soon enough for groups like the AFL-CIO. The union has been unable to get a copy and says that while the administration promotes the TPP as a job-creating, wage-raising enterprise, none of the studies to back up that claim have been made public. Reuters says only 18 Democrats have said they’ll support the treaty and “dozens” of Republicans are expected to vote “no,” leaving the 217-votes needed for passage in doubt.
