The Illinois Supreme Court declared in a ruling today that the state’s 2013 pension overhaul violates the state constitution, unraveling an effort by lawmakers to cut benefits for its underfunded public-sector pension system. The shortfall is estimated at $111 billion, one of the largest nationally. That comes on the heels of yesterday’s decision by the the Oregon Supreme Court that rejected lawmakers attempt to stem the skyrocketing costs of PERS by lowering retirees’ cost of living adjustments. |
