The Labor Department reports U.S. producer prices rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2% in October. Economists expected a 0.1% decrease because of the drop in oil prices. Excluding the volatile categories of trade margins, food and energy, core wholesale prices rose a smaller 0.1%. Services climbed 0.5% for the biggest increase in more than a year. The wholesale costs of goods fell by 0.4% for the biggest drop in a year and a half. Energy fell by a seasonally adjusted 3%. Over the past year overall producer prices have risen an unadjusted 1.5%, the smallest advance since February. |
Confidence among home builders rose four points to 58, hitting close to the highest level in nine years, according to National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo. Readings above 50 indicate that builders are optimistic about sales trends. November marks the fifth consecutive month above 50. |
House Democrats this morning re-elected Representative Nancy Pelosi to a two-year term as House minority leader, according to the Associated Press. Pelosi, a California Democrat, was re-elected by voice vote, according to a Democrat who was in the meeting. Pelosi, age 74, has been the leader of the House Democrats since 2003. |
