The Labor Department reports the number of new applications for jobless benefits rose 11,000 to 315,000 in the week that ended September 6, the highest level since late June. Economists expected 301,000. Continuing claims rose 9,000 to 2.49 million in the week that ended August 30.
 Billionaire George Soros says that possible Scottish independence would come at the “worst possible time” and create instability for Britain, in an essay in the Financial Times today. The billionaire referenced Russia’s “undeclared war” with Ukraine, the crisis in the Middle East, and the sudden emergence of ISIS as unresolved, destabilizing forces that a united Britain would need to play a leadership role.
Google said yesterday that it is requiring almost 100,000 users to change their passwords after their credentials may have been compromised. About 4.93 million Google usernames and passwords reportedly had been dumped onto a Russian-language bitcoin security forum.  Less than 2% of them were active. Google says its systems weren’t breached and the credentials likely came from other compromises involving users who recycle passwords for multiple accounts,
