| Markets opened sharply lower on worries about Europe. Espirito Santo Financial Group, owner of one of Portugal’s largest banks suspended trading its own shares and bonds, citing “ongoing material difficulties.” | |||||||
| The Labor Department reports initial claims for unemployment benefits fell by 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 304,000 in the weekended July 5. That’s the lowest level in seven weeks. Economists expected 320,000. Continuing claims increased by 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 2.58 million in the week ended June 28. | |||||||
| IBM today announced it plans to invest $3 billion over the next five years in research programs aimed at tackling chip challenges for cloud and big-data systems. The first program will address “7 nanometer and beyond” silicon technology aimed at challenges that affect current semiconductor scaling techniques. The second program will look at the development of post-silicon-era chips, which are needed because of the physical limitations of silicon-based semiconductors. | |||||||
