Chinese hackers accessed a sensitive U.S. government network containing personal data from federal employees’ security-clearance applications, the New York Times reported yesterday, citing unidentified senior U.S. officials. The breach occurred in March and targeted the Office of Personnel Management’s e-QIP system which contains financial, medical and other sensitive information on applicants for security clearances. The intrusion was traced to China, although it wasn’t clear whether the Chinese government was involved or what personal information was compromised. Top U.S. officials are in Beijing, meeting with Chinese officials as part of the two nations’ annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue.
