The Labor Department reports the prices paid for imported goods fell 0.7% in October, mostly because of lower fuel prices. Economists expected a 0.4% drop. Imported fuel prices droopped 3.4% in October. Excluding fuel, import prices were unchanged while the price of U.S.-made goods exported to other nations declined by 0.5%. |

The Federal Reserve reported industrial production fell 0.1% in October, the first drop since July, as mining and utilities output fell. Economists expected no change. The 1.6% drop in mining output came after six months of gains, and output there is up 4.8% from the same period of 2012. Manufacturing output edged up 0.3%, the third straight rise, and was up 3.3% from a year ago. Utilities output fell 1.1% but is up 0.2% from a year ago. |

Changes are coming in China. Xinhua (shin wua) the official Chinese news agency said authorities will now allow couples to have two children if one of the parents is an only child. Currently, couples are restricted to one child except in some areas. The shift comes as critics warn that a rapidly aging population could hurt the economy’s competitiveness. China will also abolish labor camps. Under the controversial system, many people have been sent to labor camps for up to four years without trial or conviction by the judiciary. |
