Initial jobless claims fell by 42,000 to a seasonally adjusted 346,000 in the week ended March 30, according to the Labor Department. That is the smallest number of applications in three weeks. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected a drop to 360,000 from a revised 388,000 the prior week. |
The Labor Department also report the prices paid for imported goods fell 0.5% in March, mostly because of lower fuel costs. That met expectations. |
In a sign that low interest rates continue to support a strengthening housing market, foreclosure filings ticked down in March, and were 23% lower in the 1st quarter than the 1st quarter of 2012, according to RealtyTrack. Foreclosure filings were reported on 152,500 U.S. properties in March and 442,117 properties for the quarter. This is the lowest number since the second quarter of 2007. |
The International Energy Agency cut its outlook for global oil-demand growth to 795,000 barrels a day from a previous forecast of 820,000 barrels a day, adding to worries that demand is falling. May Crude lost 0.2%, to trade at $94.48 a barrel on the New York Merc. |
