The Labor Department reports initial jobless claims fell by 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 332,000 in the week ended March 9. The only reading lower in the past five years was in mid-January, but that number was distorted by post-holiday layoffs.
The average rate on the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose to 3.63% in the week ending March 14, reaching the highest reading level since August, from 3.52% in the prior week, Freddie Mac said in its weekly report. A year ago, the   30-year rate was at 3.92%.
Marketwatch reports U.S. wholesale prices shot up a seasonally adjusted 0.7% in February, driven by a spike in the cost of gasoline. Gas jumped 7.2% for the biggest monthly gain since September. Excluding food and energy, core wholesale prices rose a smaller 0.2%, matching the increase in January, according to the Labor Department.
Bloomberg reports its Consumer Comfort Index advanced to minus 31.6 in the week ended   March 10 from minus 32.4 in the prior period. The gauge of personal finances   reached an eight-month high. A pickup in employment and the longest rally in   the Dow Jones Industrial Average since 1996 may keep lifting sentiment, sustaining the unexpected strength in consumer spending seen so far this year.
