Prime Minister David Cameron pledged to hold a vote on whether Britain should remain a member of the European Union within two and a half years of the next general election, which is due in 2015. In his address on his vision of the future of the 27-nation bloc, Mr. Cameron said if re-elected, a Conservative government would renegotiate the U.K.’s relationship with the EU, and then hold a referendum in the first half of its five-year term. |

Zookeepers at the Smithsonian Zoo and other zoos plan to use iPads to stimulate bored orangutans. The goal of “Apps for Apes” is boost mental activity for the endangered animals. There are more than 10 apps, including musical instruments, cognitive games, and drawing programs. Eventually, the Zoo plans to connect its orangutans with those at other zoos using video conferencing platforms. |

Gold is down slightly moving off its last session highs ahead of a vote to raise the debt ceiling. February gold is off 0.1%, to $1,691.70 an ounce on the New York Merc. |
