President Barack Obama will hold a press conference this morning at 8:15 a.m. Pacific Time. In addition to the showdown over the debt ceiling, Obama may be asked about measures to curb gun violence and immigration policy. A report in the New York Times on Sunday said Obama plans to push Congress to move quickly on an ambitious overhaul of the immigration system. |

Treasury yields are down ahead of a speech by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke this afternoon. Bernanke will give a speech 1 pm.Pacific time at the University of Michigan. He is expected to push back against interpretations of the minutes from the last Federal Open Market Committee meeting that the Fed may end its bond purchases this year. |

The U.S. Treasury and the Federal Reserve said Saturday that they wouldn’t pursue a plan to mint a $1 trillion dollar coin as a means of dealing with the federal debt ceiling. “Neither the Treasury Department nor the Federal Reserve believes that the law can or should be used to facilitate the production of platinum coins for the purpose of avoiding an increase in the debt limit,” said Treasury spokesman Anthony Coley. That’s a relief. |
