The Labor Department reported applications for jobless benefits decreased 12,000 to 350,000 in the week ended Dec. 22. Economists forecast 360,000, but claims in 19 states were estimated because some government offices were closed on Dec. 24 and 25.
The Conference Board said its consumer-confidence index declined in December, as expectations dropped to 66.5 — the lowest reading since November 2011 — from   80.9 in November. Overall consumer confidence fell to 65.1 in December, the lowest level since August.
The Commerce Department reports sales of new homes were up 4.4% in November to a two-and-a-half-year high.  It is another sign of the recovery in the nation’s housing market. Sales of new homes are 15.3% higher compared to a year ago.
Lisa Jackson, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, said Thursday she plans to resign. Jackson has been the Obama administration’s environmental watchdog since 2009. Jackson said she will step down shortly after President Obama’s State of the Union speech.
