Investors are worrying about the fiscal cliff. Top executives from U.S. companies including Caterpillar and Goldman Sachs meet with President Obama today to   talk about the nation’s fiscal troubles. Until a legislative compromise is reached to avert automatic spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to start in the new year “expect daunting headlines and emotional market volatility,”  said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank.
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said that Greece may need more help as Bild-Zeitung, Germany’s most-read newspaper slammed a rescue accord as a   “never-ending story.”  “The Greek   patient is beyond help,” Bild said in a commentary, noting that the ever-rising costs were falling on German taxpayers. “One hardly needs to imagine the worst scenario: the patient dies, the paramedic goes bust.”
BP which pleaded guilty to criminal charges after the worst U.S. oil spill in 2010, will be temporarily suspended from winning new contracts from the federal government, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said today. The company in 2011 was the Defense Department’s biggest fuel   supplier.  BP shares are off 1.5%.
