The Munich-based Ifo institute said its business climate index, based on a survey of 7,000 executives, climbed to 101.4 from 100 in October, the first gain in eight months. Economists predicted a drop to 99.5 and French business confidence increased from the lowest in more than three years this month. |
Manufacturing may be picking up in China after more than a year. HSBC said the preliminary reading of its China manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 50.4 above 50 is expansion. |
The U.S. economy will continue to its modest expansion through early 2013, according to the Conference Board. Its leading economic index rose 0.2% in October after increasing a downwardly revised 0.5% in September. Hurricane Sandy and the outcome from fiscal cliff negotiations could impact growth. October’s result beat analysts’ expectations of a 0.1% gain. The LEI is a weighted gauge of 10 indicators that are designed to signal business cycle peaks and troughs. Four of the 10 are positive, led by the interest-rate spread. Four are negative including building permits. two manufacturing-related are neutral. |
