Computer-networking-equipment maker Cisco Systems reported quarterly profit that beat expectations. Cisco surprised almost every analyst who follows the company by beating both revenue and profit estimates. CSCO is up more than 7% to 18.10 a share.
As the White House and Congress inch closer to talks on a deal to tackle the federal budget deficit, the red ink continued to flow in October. The government ran a deficit of $120 billion in October, up sharply from $98.5 billion in the same month last year. The October deficit was also higher than an estimate of $113 billion released last week by the Congressional Budget Office.
Three people have been detained for questioning in Belize in the weekend killing of Gregory Faull, a neighbor of Internet pioneer John McAfee, who is also being sought for questioning, police said. Faull, 52, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the back of the head on Sunday in his home near San Pedro Belize, on the Caribbean island of Ambergris Caye after four dogs belonging to McAfee were fatally poisoned. McAfee founded McAfee Internet Security in 1988 and left it in 1994. Firewalls make good neighbors.
