Chinese exports climbed 7.2 percent in August from a year earlier, the General Administration of Customs announced in Beijing yesterday. That compared with the 5.5 percent median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg and July’s 5.1 percent gain. Imports increased a less-than-expected 7 percent. 
October crude oil is off 0.5%, to $109.95 a barrel on the New York Merc after ending Friday at its highest settlement price in 28 months.  The oil market is watching and waiting for a US attack on Syria.
Billionaire investor Carl Icahn announced today that he is stepping away from his months-long battle against taking Dell Computer private after concluding that the effort would be “almost impossible to win.” He issued a statement before this morning’s opening bell, saying he still opposes the deal and plans to seek appraisal rights
