ADP reports private-sector jobs rose by 176,000 in August, down from 198,000 jobs in July.  Analysts polled by Marketwatch expected 185,000.
Productivity is up.  The Labor Department reports the increase in U.S. productivity in the second quarter was higher than initially reported, as workers generated even more goods and services. Productivity rose 2.3% in the April-to-June period, up sharply from a first read of 0.9%.  Economists expected a revision to 1.9%. Output of goods and services rose at 3.7% instead of 2.6% and  hours worked was revised down to 1.4% from 1.7%..
The number of Americans applying for new unemployment benefits dropped by 9,000 to 323,000 in the week ended Aug. 31, keeping initial claims near a five-and-a-half year low. Economists expected claims to fdrop to 330,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis.
