House Speaker Paul Ryan laid out goals for what he called a "once in a generation” chance to reshape the tax code. Speaking to the National Association Manufacturers conference, they include: Make tax cuts permanent, unlike the Bush-era tax cuts that expired after a decade. Lower tax rates for individuals and businesses and end many special-interest exemptions to offset the loss of federal revenue. Reduce tax rates for corporations enough to stop U.S. companies from leaving and to encourage foreign companies to relocate to America. Switch to a “territorial” tax system that makes U.S. companies more competitive with foreign rivals. Eliminate the inheritance tax and alternative minimum tax.
Republican Karen Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, beat Democrat Jon Ossoff, a onetime congressional aide, in the most expensive House race in history and the most significant test of the two parties’ political strength since Trump’s election. The Associated Press called Handel the winner in the Georgia 6th District.
