The Labor Department reports new applications for unemployment benefits fell by 15,000 to 281,000 in the week ended July 11, erasing a big increase from the week before. Economists expected a drop to 287,000 down from a revised 296,000. Continuing claims fell by 112,000 to 2.2 million in the week ended July 4. |

The Stoxx Europe 600 rose 1.1% to 404.24, for a seventh consecutive gain. The austerity measures sought by Greece’s creditors were approved by Greece’s parliament early Thursday. Anti-austerity protesters staged violent clashes on the streets of Athens, angered by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s acceptance of the creditors’ conditions, which they see as worse than those voters overwhelmingly rejected in the July 5 referendum. |

Puerto Rico said one of its agencies did not send funds to a trustee for an August 1 debt payment because the legislature didn’t appropriate the funds when it passed the budget last month.The Public Finance Corporation owes $36.3 million in principal and interest payment on maturing bonds. |
