The Commerce Department reports orders for durable goods rose a seasonally adjusted 4% in March. The increase was driven almost entirely by higher demand for autos, commercial jets, and military hardware. Core orders excluding aircraft fell 0.5% and core capital goods dropped 0.4% in March for the seventh straight month, a sign that first-quarter gross domestic product may be weak. |

Comcast today announced it has dropped its plans to acquire Time Warner Cable, as increasing pressure from regulators prompted the end of the $45.2 billion deal. |

In rural China, funerals often feature young women performing striptease routines for guests, as a way to get more people to attend and to indicate family prosperity, but the Chinese government isn’t happy about it. The Ministry of Culture announced yesterday that it will launch a strict crackdown on the “illegal but common” shows at countryside funerals, as such shows “degrade social values.” The ministry said its push had already resulted in two raids on funerals, with police detaining the events’ managers and charging them with “organizing obscene shows,” punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Badabing! Paging Tony Soprano. |
