Sentiment among small-business owners increased in July as customer demand improved, despite the gridlock in Washington. The National Federation of Independent Business said its index 1.6 to 105.2. That snapped a five-month streak of readings that were either down of flat, and beat the consensus forecast for a drop to 103.2. The jump in the July reflected a strong labor market. Owners reported having more open positions now as well as plans to hire more in the future as well as expecting stronger sales and better business conditions.
Alphabet’s Google fired employee James Damore who wrote a controversial memo that suggested men were better suited for tech jobs than women. The 10-page memo, "Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber" went viral inside Google last week and was first reported externally by the tech blog Motherboard. In it,he says that women are underrepresented in tech because of inherent psychological differences between men and women. Google CEO Sundar Pichai Monday evening wrote to staff saying the memo violated the company’s code of conduct and "cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace."
