The Wall Street Journal reports restaurants are hurting as few people go out for lunch and people eat at their desks. Americans made 433 million fewer trips to restaurants at lunchtime last year, resulting in almost $3.2 billion in lost business for restaurants, according to market-research firm NPD Group. It was the lowest level of lunch traffic in at least four decades. The average price of a restaurant lunch is up 19.5% to $7.59 since 2008.
