The Labor Department reports new applications for unemployment benefits rose by 6,000 to 278,000 in the week ended February 27. Economists expected 270,000. Continuing claims increased by 3,000 to 2.26 million in the week ended February 20.
Freddie Mac reports the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.64% for the week ending March 3, up from last week’s 3.62%. A year ago it was 3.75%. The 15-year fixed averaged 2.94% up from 2.93% last wee. A year ago it was 3.03%.
Factory orders rose 1.6% in January after two straight monthly declines, according to the Commerce Department. The increase fell short of the 2.4% rise predicted by economists. December was an unrevised 2.9% gain. Orders for durable goods, which are products meant to last at least three years rose a revised 4.7% in January, down from prior estimate of a 4.9% gain. Orders for nondurables fell 1.4%.
