| The U.S. Treasury Department yesterday took new steps to discourage corporate inversions, or deals that allow companies to move their legal address abroad to avoid taxes. They include limiting the ability of U.S. corporations to combine with foreign entities using a new foreign parent located in a third country and limiting the ability of U.S. companies to “inflate” a foreign parent corporation’s size and avoid the 80% ownership rule. In a statement, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said additional steps were planned but also called on Congress to address the issue. | |||||||
| The leading economic index jumped 0.6% in October after falling in August and September, signaling a pickup in growth after a soft patch during the late summer and early fall. “Despite lackluster third-quarter growth, the economic outlook now appears to be improving,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, an economist at the Conference Board. A measure of current conditions rose 0.2% as did the lagging. The leading economic index is a weighted gauge of 10 indicators designed to signal peaks and valleys in the business cycle. | |||||||
