The Commerce Department reports retail sales rose just 0.1% in October, held down by lower spending at gas stations, auto dealers, and grocery stores. That’s the third month in a row of weak sales. Economists expected a seasonally adjusted 0.4% increase. Auto sales fell a seasonally adjusted 0.5%. Leaving out cars and gas, sales rose 0.3%. Shoppers have used some of their gas savings to go out to eat more. Spending at restaurants climbed 0.5% in October and they are up a solid 5.5% over the past year.
The U.S. economy is overcoming the “sizable shock” from the strong dollar and weak foreign currency said Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer in a speech yesterday at a Fed conference on interest rate policy. The dollar has appreciated by 15% since July 2014, and it will remain a drag on gross domestic product well into next year. The strong dollar is also holding down inflation. He said overall inflation, as measured by the personal consumption expenditure index, is likely to rebound next year to around 1.5%, from the latest reading of 0.2% in September, once the effects of the stronger dollar and lower energy prices recede.
