Market Update Report 2/2/2015

The Commerce Department reported consumer spending fell a seasonally adjusted 0.3% in December.  That was the biggest drop since September of 2009. But it was offset by a gain in personal incomes, which were up by 0.3% which matach expectations. When adjusted for falling inflation real personal consumption expenditure spending was down only 0.1%.
The Commerce Department also reports spending on U.S. construction projects rose 0.4% in December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate $982.1 billion, led by public projects. Economists expected a 0.7% increase in December compared with originally reported 0.3% drop in Novembe revised up to a 0.2%. Private-construction spending rose 0.1% in December, with a 0.3% increase for residential projects and a 0.2% drop for nonresidential projects.  Public-construction spending rose 1.1%.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Index today fell 0.6% to 365. The index on Friday marked a January rise of 7.2%, the strongest percentage gain since October 2011.
