Pending home sales cooled in December, which the National Association of Realtors attributes to fewer homes being available for sale and a slight rise in prices. The pending home sales index fell 3.7% during December, though the year-on-year gain was 11.7%, the highest since June 2013. “
The European Union’s statistics agency reports that consumer prices were 0.6% lower than in January 2014, having fallen 0.2% on an annual basis in December. That drop was the largest since July 2009. That drop in consumer prices will probably not have an immediate effect on the European Central Bank’s policies. Last week, the ECB said it would purchase EUR60 billion ($68 billion) worth of public and private debt securities each month, mostly government bonds, starting in March and lasting until September 2016 in a bid to bring inflation to the bank’s 2% target.
