The Commerce Department reports orders for durable goods fell 3.4% in December. November’s reading was revised downward to a 2.1% drop from 0.9%. Economists expected a 0.1% increase. The weak December reading was the fourth decline in the past five months.
US home prices fell by 0.2% in November, to lower the year-on-year advance to 4.3%, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city composite index. On a seasonally adjusted basis, home prices were up 0.7%.Portland was up 6.6% from November of 2013, beating Seattle at 6%.
The Conference Board’s consumer-confidence index rose to 102.9 up from 93.1 in December, the best reading since August 2007. Economists expected 96.9. The present situation index and the expectations index both rose. Much of theoptimism comes from the fall in the price of  gasoline, which has dropped to an average of $2.04 a gallon in January from $3.70 back in June, according to the Energy Department.
