Greek stocks fell today, under pressure following the victory of the anti-austerity Syriza party in Greece’s general election, but European markets broadly turned higher. The win on Sunday by Syriza puts the future of the country’s international bailout in question, as Syriza has pledged to end austerity measures. It has said it will seek to renegotiate its financial support from its  lenders: the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank, and the European Commission.
U.S. and European leaders threatened new sanctions against Moscow after a missile attack blamed on pro-Russian separatists killed 30 civilians in the eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol. Russia blames Kiev and its Western backers for the surge in fighting, but it also called for urgent talks on implementing a September cease-fire
The Federal Open Market Committee meets for two days starting tomorrow to set monetary policy for the next six weeks and will release a statement at 11 a.m. Pacific time on Wednesday. There will not be a press conference.
