| U.S. home prices rose a seasonally adjusted 0.8% in November, according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency house price index based on mortgages sold to or guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. October’s gain was revised to 0.4% down from 0.6%. Compared to November 2013, prices are up 5.3%, and 4.5% below their peak hit in April 2007. | |||||||
| The Labor Department reports initial claims for unemployment benefits fell to 307,000 in the week ended January 10 down from a revised 317,000 the week before. Two weeks ago, claims hit their highest level since June. Continuing claims increased by 15,000 to a seasonally adjusted 2.44 million. | |||||||
| Freddie Mac reports The average rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage fell to 3.63% in the week ended January 22, hitting the lowest level May 2013, down from 3.66% last week. A year ago, the 30-year rate was at 4.39%. The average rate for the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage dropped to 2.93% down from 2.98% last week. A year ago it was 3.44% | |||||||
