The National Federation of Independent Business’s small-business optimism index rose 2.3 points to 100.4, with gains in eight out of 10 components. Increases in worker compensation reached the highest level since the peak in 2008. The group said the gains in November and December suggest the last election in which Republicans took control of the Senate and retained control of the House mattered to small-business owners.
February crude it up off of its lows but is down  1.9%, to $45.19, after dropping to as low as $44.20 a barrel in the Globex electronic session on the New York Merc. Today the United Arab Emirates’ oil minister Suhail Mohamed Faraj al-Mazrouei, said that OPEC will stick to its decision to keep oil output unchanged regardless of current oil prices.
The pound fell today on reports inflation in the UK fell to its lowest level in more than 14 years according to the Office for National Statistics. Consumer prices grew by 0.5% in December, slipping from 1% growth in November and missing forecasts of a 0.7% reading.
