Growth in many “pockets of the world” would be stronger if smarter economic policies were in place and the U.S. will push for action in those areas during this weekend’s G-20 and International Monetary Fund-World Bank spring meetings, according to Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew. In an interview on CNBC, Lew said that Germany, and other countries in Europe which are in good shape fiscally, could do more to boost demand in the region and that they need to be alert to the risk of low demand and deflation. China needs to get back on the path of demonstrating that they are committed to a market-determined exchange rate. Regarding Japan, Lew called for the government to complete work on long-term economic reforms

An extension of unemployment insurance may be getting a chance in the House of Representatives — with conditions. Roll Call reports House Rules Chairman Pete Sessions of Texas and other senior Republicans are pushing proposals to tie the extension of emergency unemployment-insurance to jobs measures and the extension of some tax breaks. House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California said he doesn’t think the five-month renewal of benefits passed by the Senate on Monday can clear the House. But he said any potential action on a House Republican alternative would come after the two-week April recess.
