Small-business optimism improved in March but is still below January according to the National Federation of Independent Business.  Its index rose 2 points to 93.4, helped  by respondents who expect real sales to be higher. Six of the ten components of the index rose, two were unchanged and two were lower. The best component, at positive 24%, is “plans to make capital outlays,” and the worst component, at negative 24%, is “earnings trends.”
The International Monetary Fund is more upbeat on the growth prospects for Europe and the U.K. It raised its gross-domestic-product forecasts for both regions. In its World Economic Outlook report, the IMF said it now expects growth in Eurpe of 1.2% in 2014 and 1.5% in 2015, up from January’s estimate of 1% and 1.4%. For the U.K., it raised its estimate to 2.9% from 2.4%. The IMF said the economic improvement  should continue given less fiscal tightening but low inflation remains the top concern, estimates the risk of deflation at about 20%.
Gold prices hit the key 1300 level today on headlines out of Ukraine .  June gold is up 1%, to $1,311.70 an ounce , as prices hit a two-week high.
