The Labor Department reports the US created 192,000 new obs in March as hiring rebounded. Every industry except manufacturing added to payrolls, with job gains strongest among professionalss and bars and restaurants,. Manufacturers lost 1,000 jobs. The size of the labor force surged by 503,000 in March, and the participation rate climbed to 63.2% from 63%, the highest level since last September.
The number of  people unemployed by 27 weeks and more fell by 110,000 to 3.74 million. That makes seven drops in eight months, and puts the ranks of the long-term unemployed well away from the peak of 6.77 million in April 2010. These people could be in the ranks of the newly employed, which added 476,000 jobs in March according to the Labor Department’s household survey, or since federal unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed expired at the end of2013, these people may have stopped looking for work.
The average rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage ticked up to 4.41% in the week that ended April 3 from 4.40% in the week before, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago, the rate was 3.54%. The average rate for the 15-year fixed increased to 3.47% from 3.42%.
