The Commerce Department reports gross domestic product   contracted by a 0.1% annual rate, down from 3.1% in the third quarter.  Marketwatch forecast a 1.0% increase. The   drop came from lower inventories and military spending. The economy expanded   at 2.2% over all of 2012.
ADP   reports that The U.S. added 192,000 private-sector positions in January, led   by a 177,000 jump in service jobs.
The Federal Reserve is expected to maintain its monetary policy   of aggressive easing at the end of its two-day meeting today and will keep it   in place until there are signs of a broad-based expansion.  The Federal Reserve will issue a statement   at 11:15 Pacific time.
Two things employees don’t expect when they attend orientation   at a new job: weigh-ins and waistline measurements.  Marketwatch reports that as companies   struggle to curb rising health-care costs, they are increasingly pointing a   finger at workers’ ballooning bellies. Insurance experts say obesity-related   health problems account for a big chunk of medical claims leading some   executives to believe the best way to trim their budgets is to get workers to   trim their own fat first.
