Bloomberg reports manufacturing in the U.S. expanded in October at a faster pace than projected as orders and production picked up, showing industry is stabilizing. The Institute for Supply Management reported its   factory index climbed to 51.7 last month, the highest since May, from 51.5 in   September. Economists estimated 51 for October and above 50 indicates growth. The report shows American factories are holding up in the face of a global economic slowdown that’s weakened manufacturing in  Asia and Europe. At the same time,  companies are feeling the effects of the fiscal cliff that’s prompted cutbacks in equipment purchases.
The Conference Board’s consumer confidence index jumped in October to the highest   level since February 2008 increasing to 72.2 in October from a downwardly revised 68.4 in September.
One expert says quatitative easing isn’t helping.  Bill Gross, who runs the world’s biggest mutual fund at Pimco., said there is no evidence that investment is being incented by the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing program. “All of the money being created and freed up is elevating asset prices, but those prices are not causing corporations to invest in future production,” Gross wrote.
